Abstract
Induction agents are helpful for omission of excitement period in general anesthesia.
These agents which have high potency and show rapid onset and minimum side effects are desirable. Pentobarbital, a barbiturate delivative, has been used as hypnotic, premedicant, sedative, anticosant and induction agent.
To clarify the difference of anesthetic action between thiopental and pentobarbital, when used a introduction agents, we monitored frontal EMG, QEEG and observed eyelid reflex for the values of onset time, duration of action of these agents, we also observed changes in blood pressure, pulse rate, end-tidal 02
tension and side effects after drugs administration in 60 patients.
The results were as follows
1. There was no clinical difference in onset time between thiopental and pentobarbital, which sho ed anesthetic effect within one minute.
2. Pentobarbital showed duration of action 3.5 times longer than thiopental
3. Respiratory depression by pentobarbital was less powerful than that by thiopental.
4. There was no significant difference in the degree of blood pressue and pulse rate change between this pental groups and pentobarbital groups.
